The Beginning

Campus Bicycles has a great history. Long time Chico locals may remember when it was originally 2 locations, one on the corner of Vallembrosa and Mangrove, in a small 700 sq.ft shop, or on Nord Avenue. In 1975, Campus Bikes shifted over to its first downtown location on 5th and Main, next to the Senator Theater. That is where Budd Schwab, and his wife, Ann, bought the shop in 1982. Budd and Ann have always and continually been involved in Chico’s bike community. They were founding members of Chico Velo, and Ann was the President of the Board of Directors for many years (you can find Campus Bicycles sponsoring Chico Velo’s Valet during the Saturday Morning Market).

Campus has moved twice more down Main St., settling on the corner of 3rd and Main in 2017, where the storefront is spacious and the service shop is tucked in the center. In the early days, Campus Bikes sold Raleighs, Peugeots, and a new Japanese bike hot on the market- Nishiki. Waking up early and leaving late, Budd worked hard to maintain the consistency, service, and inventory the bike shop needed to support Chico’s biking community. He is no stranger to wrenching on bikes. After serving in the Air Force for seven years as an airplane mechanic, Budd says that he “descended the technological ladder;” from replacing hydraulic lines on military planes to overhauling bottom brackets, there are few mechanical tricks that Budd is unfamiliar with.

The Now

In February 2023, Campus changed ownership to local bike enthusiast Dax Downey. With over 30 years in the bike business, Campus Bicycles will continue to thrive and grow in order to serve the bike community of Chico.

Dax started his bike shop career in the mid 1980s as a mechanic at Family Cyclery in Chico, CA. Inspired by his time there, he opened Greenline Cycles in 1992 in Oroville, CA. In 2012, after 20 years of success in Oroville, Greenline opened a second location in Chico, where it has remained since.

With the two bike shops working together, we envision a place that caters to every style of riding/rider; new or experienced, young and old, pedal or electric.
